Summer CSA # 16

Good afternoon everyone

August 1st

This week the weather was cooler and we had some rain, not as much as others but enough. My husband appreciated the cooler working weather, I on the other hand was happy to welcome the nice hot day today!

We've made a habit of trying to get out Friday evenings to enjoy a little time together not farming and have been really enjoying our local options.  I thought I would share since many of you come from out of town and i thought it might a fun thing to try while your in the area! Ridgeway and Crystal Beach are great little towns and only a few minutes past us.

One of our new favorites is Brimstones Brewery on Ridge Road which is only open Fri 5-11 and  Sat 3-11, it'a a great place to enjoy some craft beer and have a bite to eat - there isn't a full menu but 3 to 4 homemade appetizer options made fresh by a local caterer called Crave Local Fresh.

Another option is a new cafe called the Flying Squirrel and their food is fantastic.  They are open 8-8 and have some really fresh and healthy options and yummy desserts. Also on Ridge Road.

If your into a fish taco, the Crystal Chandelier makes a really good one with a homemade corn tortilla they offer them fried(tortilla)  but i prefer them fresh! Anyway, just thought I let you know in case any of you are interested!

This weeks basket:

1 bag of Chez Nous Salad Mix
Tomatoes
Leeks
Cucumber
Beans
Kale
Radishes
Herb:Savory ( this herb is awesome with beans...and would also go well with any leek dish)

Juicing Bag
1 Fennel
the last of the snap peas
Amaranth leaves and a little swiss chard
Mint
Parsley
Celery Leaves

Cucumbers are numerous this year!

We have tomatoes planted in 3 locations this year- the greenhouse, the field and in this moveable hoophouse.  In here are all my Brandywine and a few other big guys.
The plants are loaded!

Growing fennel for the first time this year. Not a vegetable that I am too familiar yet.  They seem to be of all sizes so i may have to start sending them out as they are ready.

My favorite Crisp Mint Lettuce

Amaranth greens- found in the salad mix and juicing bags. This green is cooked like spinach.

This weeks juicing bag offered a medley of different items parsley, celery leaves, fennel, peas, cucmber, swiss chard and mint!

We have some good news this week! The chickens have gotten noisy...and that meant eggs! I am not sure why but when a chicken lays an egg she lets the whole farm know...and in case we didn't hear her the rooster does too! Eggs are in the near future!

Happy long weekend!

Shirley and Rick
